  3. Question:
  4. With NetWare  386 v3.1 on  the horizon, I started wondering about
  5. some of  the  features that 3.1  will offer end-users.   I took a
  6. look at  the NetWare 386  Technical Overview over the weekend and
  7. it  started me wondering which of the pre-announced features will
  8. be in  3.1.  Here is  a list of  the features as presented in the
  9. Technical Overview.  If you know if they will or will not make it
  10. into 3.1 I would appreciate your input.

  12. Extended File System (WORMs & CD ROMs)
  13. Backup NLM
  14. Network Management Reporters and Agents
  15. Open NLM C APIs
  16. Interprocess Communications (IPC) APIs
  17. Remote Procedure Call (RPC) APIs
  18. Extended File System Interface
  19. NetWare Streams
  20. IPX/SPX Streams Protocol Stack
  21. AFP File and Print Services NLM *
  22. Appletalk Streams Protocol Stack *
  23. NetBIOS
  24. Named Pipes
  25. Transport Level Interface (TLI)
  26. NFS NLM *
  27. TCP/IP Streams Protocol Stack *
  28. Mirrored Servers *
  29. Novell NL1000 Support
  30. Novell NL/2 Support
  31. The items followed  by an * are NOT going to be in 3.1.  But what
  32. about  the  others?  Is  everything  else going  to  make it  (my
  33. understanding  is that all  of the development  platforms will be
  34. implemented,  i.e.,  IPC  APIs,  Streams,  Named Pipes,  NetBIOS,
  35. etc.)?

  37. Is  there  anything that  will  be in  3.1  that wasn't mentioned
  38. above?

  40. Answer:
  41. All things are subject to change but here are a few things
  42. that I believe will not make it into 3.1.

  44. Extended File System
  45. Named Pipes

  47. As you already know the add-on protocols are just that, separate
  48. and purchasable products.  AFP, NFS, etc.  It was not decided
  49. from my last information if a limited TCP/IP stack was going to
  50. be included or a separate product.  There of course WILL be a
  51. full TCP stack shipped with the NFS product.

  53. Keep in mind that it is important to make sure 3.1 and its API's
  54. are stable and bug free before we start shipping things like NFS,
  55. and Appletalk. So it would not be unreasonable to assume 3.1 will
  56. ship without everything available day one.  One last word of
  57. advise.  Don't believe everything you read in the technical
  58. overview.  All of those capabilities will take time and
  59. resources.
